IHS Wants to Give You Money

Are you a current or prospective graduate student with an interest in classical liberal / libertarian ideas?  If so, consider applying for a Humane Studies Fellowship.

  • Awards up to $15,000
  • Open to full-time and prospective graduate students, including MBA and law students
  • Winners get access to a number of invitation-only programs from the Institute for Humane Studies, including their Career Development Seminars, their Research Colloquium, and Advanced Topics weekend seminars.
  • Plus, as a special bonus apply by January 5th and the $25 application fee will be waived!  Just use the code: HSFJan5.  If that’s too soon, the final deadline is January 31st.

In 2013, IHS awarded close $750,000 to over 200 students. You don’t really want to get left out of that action, do you?

I received several HSFs while I was a graduate student at the University of Arizona.  Money is tight as a grad student, and there’s often financial pressure to teach an extra course just to get by, even if one’s time could be better spent developing one’s research.  IHS’s help was a big help in this respect.

But arguably even more important was the connection with IHS’s network of scholars and support staff.  I can’t tell you how many fascinating, brilliant, and overall wonderful people I’ve met through IHS’s programs.  I can’t imagine what path my intellectual development would have taken if I had not been exposed to the vast array of fascinating ideas in fields well outside my narrow niche of political philosophy.  And I don’t believe for a second that I would have experienced whatever modest success I have in my career if without the support of the program officers at IHS and of the scholars I have met through its programs.

So I urge those of you who are eligible to apply for one of IHS’s fellowships.  But if you’re not feeling ready for that yet (or even if you are, as an addition!), most definitely apply to one of their summer seminars.  It’s a decision you almost certainly won’t regret.
