Save the Jobs!

The New York Times reports that automation may be coming to long-distance trucking. Oh, no, think of all the lost jobs! Capitalism’s relentless pursuit of cold hard efficiency will be putting truckers and their families the street.

Still, automating commercial driving is controversial and — potentially — a job killer.

There are more than three million truck drivers in the United States, according to the American Trucking Associations, and about one in every 15 workers in the country is employed in the trucking business.

There is concern that if commercial trucking is completely automated, it would be economically devastating for small towns in America that thrive from supporting the long-haul trucking industry.

Some people oppose automated trucking in order to help save small-town America. They want to keep more money in the hands of good working class folk rather than fat cat capitalists.

As for me, I don’t think that goes far enough. I propose that we not only ban automated trucking, but also require that all truck hauls over 250 miles have two drivers. Just think of the ever widening circles of prosperity that could be created if we require trucking companies to stop putting profits and efficiency over people and instead spread the wealth to the laborers upon which they depend.
