Democracy Works Because It Doesn’t Work

That’s the title of my contribution to “Philosophers on the 2016 US Presidential Race” at Daily Nous.  I briefly hypothesize there that the rise of Donald Trump is in part because some of the normal checks against the will of the people are breaking down. Here’s the final line of my piece:

Trump is what happens when the various safety mechanisms in place in modern democracy—mechanisms that prevent the people from getting what they actually want—start to break down.
