E-Reading for BHLs
I recently bought a Kindle, and I’m loving it. If nothing else, the one-handed operation is great for use while bottle feeding babies – and since I had twins 2 months ago, I’ve been doing plenty of that! But I also like that highlighted text goes into a special file that I can later transfer to my computer. This is great for mining quotes for research – much easier than typing them in manually. And hyperlinked endnotes are a lot easier for me than constantly flipping back and forth in a physical book.
So now I’m busy stuffing the thing with content. I’ve found a few great sources of material that would probably be of interest to readers of this blog. But I’m sure I’m missing some. Please let me know in the comments if you have any sources I should check out!
- The Ludwig von Mises Institute – Most of you probably already know about this one. The selection of books here on Austrian economics and libertarianism is nothing short of fantastic. And all free! Lots of material in PDF format, and a growing number in Epub format (a new title released every weekday, and announced on their blog). A few favorites I’ve gotten from here: James Martin’s Men Against the State, and Albert Jay Nock’s Our Enemy: The State.
- Liberty Fund’s Online Library of Liberty: I only recently discovered the large Epub collection available here. There’s an absolutely amazing selection of books on this site, mostly historical, and again all free. I just finished downloading Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and the newly released first volume of Liberty Fund’s 6-volume translation of the Collected Works of Frederic Bastiat: The Man and The Statesman: The Correspondence and Articles on Politics.
So far, I’ve stuck to downloading the Epub books and using Calibre to translate them into MOBI format for reading on my Kindle. Calbire has the capacity to translate PDFs into MOBI as well, but I haven’t had as much luck with that. Any advice would be welcome. It’d be nice if I could get it to work, since the selection of material currently available in PDF is much greater than that available in Epub.
