Liberty is Personal
“If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.”
Rudyard Kipling
Recent research has done a great deal to remind us that, as a species, humans are made out of stories. The political scientist Leslie Paul Thiele’s Heart of Judgement discusses the ways in which narrative helps us develop a sense of judgement. Thiele also reminds us that neuroscientists have found that we retain information presented in a narrative form twice as well and as long as we retain information presented in non-narrative formats. Neuroscience has also found that we usually make choices without knowing why, and then back-format a persuasive explanation so quickly and thoroughly we believe we thought it through. We build our lives from stories without even knowing it. This is what Jon Gotschall reminds us of in his book The Story Telling Animal. We are made from stories, and those stories connect us more closely that we could ever have dreamed.
With that in mind, the crew at Learn Liberty have put together a series of economic stories–brief and personal and true–in hopes that the power of narrative can help persuade others of the importance of liberty. They’re calling the series “Liberty is Personal.” Once you watch, you’ll see why.
