George Smith’s The System of Liberty
Liberty Matters is hosting a discussion this month on George H. Smith’s book, The System of Liberty: Themes in the History of Classical Liberalism. It kicks off with an introductory essay by George, which includes some interesting biographical background on the book and some of his other, related projects. Then follow three response essays by David Gordon, Ralph Raico, and our own Jason Brennan. The conversation is just getting underway now, and should continue for the rest of the month.
George and I crossed swords a bit earlier this year over my critique of the non-aggression principle. But I have nothing but respect for his work as an intellectual historian, and The System of Liberty is George at his finest. I learned a tremendous amount in reading it, and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the history of classical liberal and libertarian ideas. Buy it now, keep following his work at Libertarianism.org, and hope that his plans for a trilogy are realized soon!
