A few links of possible interest to BHL readers:
- Over at Jacobin, Lyle Jeremy Rubin looks at Bleeding Heart Libertarianism and related phenomena as attempts to save capitalism from its “internal contradictions.” The presentation of libertarian views strikes me as mostly fair, though it seems the author missed an opportunity to explore the more radical “anti-capitalist” views of contributors like Roderick and Gary.
- Last week, I spoke with Tom Woods about libertarianism and the basic income. The podcast is online now. Tom was a gracious and fair host – but also a quite well-prepared and challenging one! We covered a lot of ground over the hour, mostly focusing on sorts of property-rights-based argument I made in my Independent Review article on the topic. The one issue I wish we’d spent more time talking about was the Georgist argument that self-ownership and labor-mixing 1) can’t justify property rights in the raw value of land and therefore 2) can’t provide a principled basis for opposing a tax on that value. This is an argument to which I’ve grown increasingly attracted in recent years, and it would have been interesting to hear more about how someone like Tom would have responded to it.
